Every Sunday on the patio
Open Mic / Campfire Circle format
5:00 - 8:00 pm or so

Since 1992, Kathy Hussey has hosted this one-of-a-kind open mic writers night at Wilhagans in Southeast Nashville. Innovative concepts like "Debut Tuesday" (still named after the Tuesday night version of this long-running event) and the "Campfire Circle" format set this show apart from all other writers nights in town. (see FAQs for more) Writers who come to this weekly gathering tend to become regulars very quickly, and stay for the whole night - there's not that sense of people showing up to play their slot and then moving on to the next club. This is an anticipated weekly event, and a very inclusive and supportive community of talented non-mainstream writers and artists.

 Writers Night FAQ

How can I play at Wilhagans?

Show up on a Sunday night around 5:00 and pick a spot in the circle. It is an OPEN MIC (even though there's no mic), so all are welcome to play. Most people come for the whole evening...

How many songs will I play?

It depends on how big the circle is...we go around and around until we're sick of it, or too dizzy to continue.

Can I bring my band?

At the moment we are not using a PA, but if you have a girl that plays guitar with you, or a guy who sings harmony on your songs, you're more than welcome to bring them...the more the merrier. No full drum kits please.

Can I play cover songs?

It technically is a Writers Night but no one is going to get out the cane and pull you out of the circle if you are dying to play a cover. This is one of the most laid-back and easy-going writers nights in town...

I'm going to be in town on October 42, 2053 - can I get a slot on your show?

Again, it is an open mic. Kathy has never, in 14 years, "booked" anyone on this show. You are more than welcome, whenever you are here, to come play at Wilhagans on a Sunday night.

Is there a keyboard available?

no...sorry. But feel free to bring one!

Can I play even though my guitar doesn't plug in?

yes - we will all be playing acoustic, sans PA- no problem.

Will there be a drunk guy who asks me if I know any Jimmy Buffett?

Occasionally. But Kathy will be all over it, and you won't have to deal with him unless you just want to because you long for the good old days when you made your living placating drunk people in bars over your little portable PA. good times...

Will there be half-price home-made pizza available every Tuesday night?

yup - but now that this show is on Sunday nights, we won't be able to take advantage of that.

Will there be a volleyball game going on when I first arrive?

yeah. probably.

Will I have to breathe clouds of smoke from other people's cigarettes?

NO! The room where we play in the cold months is designated NON-SMOKING for this show (when we're outside it's not an issue). All the oxygen you can breathe at no extra charge. (Smokers: don't worry, the rest of the bar is one big smoking area, and it's no big deal to step out of this room and have a smoke - you can even be close enough to feel like you're still part of the action ...)

What is "Debut Tuesday"?

The last writers night of every month is "Debut Tuesday" (yes, we know it's a Sunday night show, but for TEN YEARS it was Tuesday night, and we like the title, so we're keeping it, darnit.) ...at the previous Debut Tuesday, we will have chosen a song title (or a concept, or a first line) and whoever has written a song with that title plays them for us on this night. There are some people who write the title of the month EVERY month - there are some who NEVER participate - and everything in between. There's no pressure to do it, and all are welcome to come play other stuff on this night also - regardless of whether they have written the monthly title. It's OPTIONAL and very fun!

visit the Debut Tuesday Title Archive (and help Kathy fill in the blanks if you can, please!)

What is a "Campfire Circle"?

It's just what it sounds like, actually...when the show is outside on the patio (anytime it's warm enough) we set up the chairs in a big circle (no PA) and go around doing one song at a time, campfire-style. This is one of Kathy's favorite things, because people tend to open up and talk about their songs in more depth, share stories and play things they wouldn't normally play. Sometimes
Kathy will initiate a theme question that follows the circle around - "What was your first guitar?", "Tell us about a brush with greatness (a celebrity encounter)", "What color socks are you wearing?""Why do you dress like that?"...it doesn't get any better than this, folks. : )

[ small ! ] Campfire Circle

Will we play inside or outside?

Depends on the weather - there is a great patio out back, and if the forecast calls for a low ABOVE 60 degrees, we will be out there. When we are inside, Kathy turns the large back room that is usually used for playing darts, into a cozy cafe-style venue.

If I sign up for the mailing list will I be plagued with daily emails and open to future offers to increase my penis-size?

definitely not. Kathy is quite proud of herself if she manages to send 2 emails a month, and she will NEVER give your address to anyone for ANY reason, nor will your address be visible to other recipients...

What if I have a question that isn't answered here?

ask it in an email wilhagans@kathyhussey.com
